The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) organize these consultations every year at global and regional levels. Their purpose is to bring the views of civil society organizations that support refugees, stateless people and forcibly displaced people to UNHCR’s Executive Committee, and to help turn their recommendations into action.
This year’s consultations were held online from 28 to 30 September under the theme “Protecting Refugee Rights and Strengthening Protection Systems.” The meeting also marked the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. Participants discussed the challenges facing the right to seek asylum and the international protection system worldwide.
